Live-In Weekend 09

The “Live-In Weekend” is a time when young men from different walks of life come together to spend the weekend with seminarians discerning for the priesthood as they themselves discern the priesthood.

The visiting men get the opportunity to pray with the seminarians at Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours, Holy Hour, and Benediction for the days that they will stay at the Seminary. They get a taste of the academic formation that all seminarians receive at the University of Dallas as they accompany seminarians up the famous hill to attend Theology and Philosophy classes with them.

The young men who visit for the weekend also get the chance to spend some time and to have fun with the seminarians as they play different sports and games all throughout the weekend. Spending a couple of days at the seminary and listening to the stories of priests and the stories of how men of different walks of life, just like the men visiting, made the choice to become a seminarian come as a prayerful opportunity for the visiting men to open up to God’s call in their lives.

Thirteen Seminarians prepare to attend March for Life

December 16th, 2009

MarchForLifeIIDuring the time of priestly formation, opportunities are often presented where seminarians are able to give witness to our faith. Occasionally, these opportunities lead them beyond the local community, to proclaiming the Gospel with fellow Catholics on a national level.

In 2010, on January 21-24, thirteen seminarians from Holy Trinity Seminary will be going to the “March for Life” in Washington D.C.   The “March for Life” is an annual pro-life rally protesting abortion, held in our nation’s capital. Since 1973, Pro-Life supporters from around the country have been rallying and marching in Washington D.C. to witness peacefully, to protest, and to pray on the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade. Last year approximately 200,000 people attended this rally.

Several of the seminarians here at Holy Trinity Seminary have even been invited to serve Mass with Cardinal DiNardo, Archbishop of Galveston Houston, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Cardinal DiNardo is the chair of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishop’s Committee on Pro-Life activities and will be the main celebrant and homilist at the Mass.

We ask for your prayers and support- for an end to abortion and for our pilgrimage.

MARCH FOR LIFE PRAYER NOVENA TO OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE

Our Lady of Guadalupe,
we turn to you who are the protectress of unborn children
and ask that you intercede for us,
so that we may more firmly resolve
to join you in protecting all human life.

Let our prayers be united
to your perpetual motherly intercession
on behalf of those whose lives are threatened,
be they in the womb of their mother,
on the bed of infirmity,
or in the latter years of their life.

May our prayers also be coupled with peaceful action
which witnesses to the goodness and dignity of all human life,
so that our firmness of purpose
may give courage to those who are fearful
and bring light to those who are blinded by sin.

Encourage those who will be involved in the March for Life;
help them to walk closely with God
and to give voice to the cry of the oppressed,
in order to remind out nation
of its commitment to life, liberty,
and the pursuit of happiness for all people.

O Virgin Mother of God,
present our petitions to your Son
and ask Him to bless us with abundant life.

Amen.

University of Dallas (The University News by Nina Di Pietro) – Over the hill and through the Braniff building, to Capp House the seminarians of Holy Trinity Seminary go. More than 20 seminarians, along with quite a few University of Dallas students, crowded into the Cap Bar last Tuesday to hear live performance from Sean DeWitt and Friends.

“It was nice to see the mingling of the two communities,” commented seminarian DeWitt of the Austin Diocese on having his community there supporting him. Even the rector of HTS, Fr. Michael Olson, attended the evening’s performances.

“I sang at Capp House because of the new music I wanted to share with people,” said DeWitt. “My music has changed a lot since I joined the seminary, and I wanted to share it with people.”

DeWitt’s new songs, instead of focusing on one idea, are now more story-oriented and “truer to life.” He sing about life lessons now, rather than single topics, such as love. Some of his new songs include “Sing that Love Song,” “The Friends Song,” “The Little Things in Life” and “The Matador.” Two more songs are on the way; DeWitt just did not have enough time to finish them before his Capp House performance.

Friends that accompanied DeWitt included vocalist junior Rachel Davies, guitarist junior Brennan Pecha and fellow seminarians Michael Baynham, Stephen Elser, Christian Mondragon and Joseph deOrbegozo, who made up the jazz quartet Quadrinity.

These musician just recently joined together and were a big hit. Bassist and band leader Mondragon comees from the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. Soprano and alto sax player Baynham, a newcomer to jazz, comes from the Dallas Diocese and trumpet player deOrbegozo and keyboardist Elser hail from the Little Rock Diocese.

“They were so talented,” said senior Rebecca Falivene. “The were really great. I liked all of the instruments. They played jazz, which was interesting; we don’t have a lot of people who play jazz at UD.”

Practicing for two weeks, Quadrinity played nine songs, some of which included “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy,” “My Foolish Heart,” “My Funny Valentine” and “So What?” They opened with the song “So Far Away,” written by DeWitt and accompanied by him on vocals.

“I thought it [the evening] was great,” said deOrbegozo. “It was a good mix.”

Throughout the month of October, Holy Trinity seminarians spent most of their nights studying for their classes and participating in seminary obligations. Yet it was not all work and no play.

The seminarians made time from their busy schedules to play intramural football against teams comprised of other University of Dallas students. Intramural sports provide an opportunity to gather with fellow university students, to compete, and to share time and fellowship.

Each year the seminarians gather a team together from among those chosen by Christ to study for priestly life. Each seminarian brings his own personal skills and abilities with him to priestly formation. This year, Holy Trinity Seminary has been blessed with an amazing amount of talent and physical abilities among the seminarians.

The beginning of the season started out rough with two back to back loses against two of the more talented teams. Throughout the month, the seminarians persisted in each game, never giving up no matter what the score was. After what seemed like a difficult season, the seminarians barely made the playoffs with the public expectation of overwhelming defeat by those who had crushed them before.

No one could predict the epic David and Goliath story that would unfold as many university students and even more seminarians lined the field watching the titanic competition. But unfold it did, the seminarians crushed not one but two teams they had lost to in the regular season making them the reigning champions of intramural football for the 2009 season.

There was a great sense of unity which was formed over the month of October. It was great to see the seminarians work together and play well against some challenging teams. All members of the Seminary’s team made the season a success. Among those great successes— one stood far greater.

After each game, win or lose, the seminarians would invite their opponent to share with them a moment of prayer of thanksgiving. This provided an opportunity for witness and solidarity in the Faith as shared by opponents and not enemies. Players, referees, and spectators all joined for a moment of prayer after each game. This nightly event demonstrated an even greater success than athletic triumph.
